Writing to explain and inform

What have you read or written in the past few days that falls under the genre of writing that explains and/or informs? Be specific. Do you encounter this type of writing more than persuasive writing in your daily life? Be specific.

  1. In the past few days i have read and written things that fall under the genre of wrtitng that explains and or informs. i recently had to do a reflection on a character in the novel The Catcher in the Rye, i had to explain whether or not i would be his friend if he attented my school. i have also seen signs outside that were informing such as a stop sign and a no smoking sign. i think that we encounter this type of writing more than persuassive writing in our daily lives. i think this because this type of writing is seen so many times whether its in school or outside of school. persuassive writing is not seen everyday and may not always be directed towards us.

  2. In the past few days i have seen many types of writing that explain. I've seen instruction manuels that explain how a process shall be done. Even on the road in the car there are many signs that explain. For example, bill boards explaining how to sign up for services. There are also signs such as stop signs or no smoking signs that explain to us on what we should do. I personally encounter more forms of writing that explain. This is because on where i am most of the time. In school there are many signs that explain on how to sign up for different programs. Even outside of school such as on streets or community centres there are always forms of writing explaining programs or special promotions.

  3. In the past few days we have been reading The Catcher in the Rye. We were given this reflection about if you would be friends with Holden Caulfield if he attended my school. This writing explains and informs if ill be his friend or not. I think that we encounter this writing in our daily lives then persuasive writing because we see this type of writing everyday in school. Persuasive is not encounter everyday because its not directed toward any other classes except English.

  4. What I read that informs me are information paragraphs from the newspaper. I would find this type of writing as much as persuasive writing because persuasive writing is in the form of advertisements on walls or a page in a newspaper but Informative writing is found right beside the advertisements. Writing that informs me would be found on the internet when I would be researching a person, a place or a thing or it would be found in a newspaper article. I recently just wrote a journal entry explaining if the main character, Holden Cawfeild, came to Father Bressani Catholic High School for grade 11. I had to write about whom he was, where he lived, what interests he had, and why he chose this school.

  5. I have read and written things that fall under the genre of wrtitng that explains and or informs In the past few days I have read Catcher in the Rye it informs and explains about a teenage boy named holden caulfield that hates school. Lately I have seen many objects with instructions that inform me how to use something. I do see this type of writing more than persuasive writing becuase persuasive writing is seen in important places that many people go .Unlike instructions there seen on every object and direct us.

  6. During the past few days, I have encountered many different types of writing that informs/ explains me to do something. I have encountered this in school home work; when I have questions to does that instruct me to look up something or to write about something using these specific guidelines that are given in the question. I do see this genre of writing quite often because you can write many things to instruct and explain for almost any product or written documents. You can find instructions which obviously instruct you to do something on just about anything, For example cell phones, T.V’s., radio’s, iPod’s, car’s, and so many more items. You can even find instructions when you buy new clothes which instruct you on how to properly wash the item. I do not think I encounter this more than persuasive writing, I think I encounter the two just about the same amount of times.

  7. In the last few days, I have encountered alot of diffrent types of writing that explains and or imforms me to doing something. I have read instruction manuals for all sorts of diffrent devices like Ipods and games that explain and inform how to fix or use that device. I also encounter this type of writing everyday and sometimes dont even notice, for example this blog informs me with directions and gives me instructions to follow. I encounter this type of writing alot more than persuasive writing because you need directions and information for everything you use in your daily life. Persuasive writing is only used when you are trying to convince someone to believe.

  8. In the past few days, i have read and encountered many types of writing that explains/informs. I have encountered it first in my school work. I have been reading Catcher in the Rye and it explains the story of a teenage boy who hates school. Another form i have encounter in the past few days are instruction manuals. Places you can find this type of writing is on cooking shows, during school lessons or street signs.

  9. In the past few days, I have encountered writing that informs or explains. During this weekend I have read magazines that explain specific topics, read signs on the streets informing drivers of the speed limits and road closures. I have also encountered signs explaining why you should vote for a certain representative in the upcoming election. While at a local arena, there are signs that inform you of which team is playing on what ice. Everyday people will experience writing that informs or directs. Another example is at the Apple store. I recently went in to get my iPod fixed and the associate there read a manual that informed and explained to him the steps on repairing the device. I believe that people encounter writing that informs or explains on a daily basis as much as they do on persuasion. I believe this because when you go shopping you see advertisements that both inform and explain what they are trying to advertise but they are also persuading you to buy/do it as well. On TV you also get informed of a product but you are also being persuaded to buy it as well. Sometimes you won’t realize that even the signs on the road for the upcoming elections both inform you of ways they can make a difference and try to persuade you to vote for them. Both types of writing can be seen and used on a daily basis.

  10. In the past few days I’ve seen many types of writing that explains compared to persuasive writing. An example of writing that explains is while my father was driving, we needed to find directions. Writing pieces that direct a person to go somewhere is an example of writing that explains. I encounter many forms of writing that explain because everywhere I go, like school, I see posters or bulletins that explain to me to do something or how I should do it. While reading the first couple chapters of Catcher in the Rye it explained to me the story of a teenage boy named Holden and how he feels towards growing up. From reading this novel, it informed and taught me that everyone grows up and we should try doing our best in school to have an easier future. Lastly, in my opinion I see about the same amount of writing that persuades and explains on a daily basis.

  11. During the past few days, I have been reading "the concise human body" which is an informitave piece of writing and explains a specific subject. I believe that, depending on your daily routine; what you do or where your going, may change whether or not you encounter persuasive or infromative writing more often. In my daily life, I see more persuasive writing. In my school, near my house (street signs) and other forms of persuasion such as television ads and radio ads.

  12. In the past few days i have read and written things that fall under the genre of writing that explains and or informs. last week we were given this one page reflection to tell if you would be friends with Holden Caufiled from Catcher in the Rye and if he attended father bressani. Personally i think we encounter this writing in our everyday lives rather than persuasive writing because persusassive writing is only really seen in important places.

  13. In the past few days, I have read many things that fall under the genre of writing that explains and or informs. I read many signs, such as, stop signs, do not enter signs, exit signs, and no smoking signs. Also, the instructions for my homework are informative. This weekend I put up my Christmas tree with the help of the manual, which is also another form of writing that explains. I strongly believe that we encounter more writing that explains and informs, rather than persuasive writing in our daily life. We encounter writing that informs and explains almost every single day in our homework and at school. I believe, writing that explains and informs serves a better purpose in our life, than writing that persuades.

  14. I have read and written many types of writing that explains and informs during the past couple of days. First of all last week are class was assigned a one page reflection on the novel we are working with Catcher in the Rye to state are opinion if we would be Holden Caulfield’s friend if he attend our school. This is a perfect example because we were asked to explain are reason and inform the purpose of our opinion in this reflection. I have also seen many stop signs and driving signs that are very clear and direct a firm reason which explains and informs people to understand its meaning. I definitely believe we encounter this type of writing more frequently than persuasive writing because writing that informs and explains is seen everywhere even when we aren’t expecting it and comes in several forms around our environment and society everyday.

  15. In the past few days I have read and written several things that explain and/or informs. I have read instruction manuals that explain how put things together and operate them and also board game instruction manuals that explain how to properly play the game. I entered contests in which I had to read and understand rules before I entered. I also came across many signs that give certain instructions or explain certain rules for people to obey. Personally, I think that we encounter this type of writing more often then persuasive writing, his writing is all around us no matter where we are. No matter what your do there is always a place for misunderstanding and explanation. You can come across this in schools, when you sign up for events or councils or simply an assignment outline that explains to you what you will have to be doing. I also encounter this type of writing outside in places such as bus stops and billboards when a company is trying to explain a product they want to sell. This type of writing can also be seen on ads outdoors by real-estate agents are explaining their business, or different political parties explaining what they support and promise in upcoming elections.

  16. In the past few days, I have come across many forms of writing that either explain or inform. Many signs that we see on the road such as stop signs or speed limit signs inform drivers about what they should do to stay safe while driving. I think someone my age would encounter persuasive writing more than writing that explains or informs, but it might not be the same for all people. People my age encounter many forms of persuasive writing because of television, the internet and advertisements in general but adults might encounter more forms of writing that informs or explains. This is because they may have already established their own views and are not as easily influenced by persuasive writing.

  17. During the past few days I have encountered writing that explains and informs. I have encountered such writing in my homework, which instructed me to complete a certain task or respond to a question. For example, I read instructions that explained the steps on how to bake a cake. And I encountered street signs, which informed drivers of the rules of the road i.e. speed limit signs, stop signs, and one way signs. In my opinion, on a daily basis, I encounter writing that explains and informs more often than persuasive writing. This is because most of my time is spent at school and where we constantly encounter writing that informs us through homework, posters or even rules we must follow in the classroom.

  18. In the past couple of days I have read “The Catcher In The Rye”, it is a story that is written in the style that explains and or informs. I do not believe I encounter this style more often than persuasive writing. I believe persuasive writing is more common specifically advertising surrounds us everywhere. We hear it first thing in the morning on the radio and on television. We see advertising on our way to school and even in our school. Every business is trying to prove and persuade you on why their product is better than the rest.

  19. During the past few days i have encountered writing that explains and informs. We encounter this type of writing almost everyday when doing homework. I find that both persuasive writing and this genre of writing appear most in our lives.Examples we see of this genre of writing on a daily basis are: stops signs, Exit signs, no smoking signs and posters and rules.

  20. In the past couple of days I have probably encountered more pieces of writing that inform/explain than I think I have. There is so much going on the in the world, so much being explained to us that we do not even know we are being informed on said subjects. But on a subconscious level our brain's are processing all this information, we might not be aware of it now, but when we encounter the subject in the future we will be able to relate to the topic on some level.

An example of this happened to me over the weekend, when I was on my way to my hockey tournament. There was a sign that was informing drivers that the far left lane would be closed the next day... For whatever reasons. I however, payed no attention to the notice posted as my mom drove by it. The next day my dad was taking me to the second game, for some reason I was able to inform him not that the route my mom had used the day before might take longer than usual because one of the lanes was going to be shut down. I was not sure how I knew this, something just clicked in my head that made me realize the problem.

  21. In the past few days I have read or written many things that have fallen under the genre of writing that explains or informs. Recently, my enlgish class were asked to write a one page reflection on The Catcher in the Rye saying if we would or wouldn't be friends with one of the characters in the book. This reflection was informing my reader on whether or not I would be friends with Holden Caulfield. Some of the signs that I have seen that informs/explains are: billboards, posters, websites, newspapers, stop signs, speed limits, and other signs that have informed me. I think that I encounter both persuasive and informative writing everyday. Everywhere you go you will always be encountering persuasive writing or informative writing. I think it depends on where you are or what you are looking at. One day you might enocunter more persuasive writing and another day you might encounter more informative writing.

  22. In the past few days, I have written many things that fall under the category of explanation/instruction. At school, we wrote a reflection explaining our point of view on Holden Caulfield from The Catcher and the Rye. In my spare time, a lot of my text messages would be considered explanations or instructions as well. In my opinion, we encounter this type of writing just as much as we do persuasive, because many forms of writing could be considered both of these genre’s. For example, although The Catcher and the Rye does explain and inform, it also persuades.

  23. In the past few days I have read things that fall under the genre of writing that explains or informs. I have read the book Catcher in the Rye and this book is explaining the story of a boy named Holden Caufield and his experiences of when he was a teenager. Also in the past few days I have encountered types of writing such as food recipies which are explaining how to make something. I believe that we encounter writing that informs and explains much more than we encounter writing that persuades because it is a lot more common in our everyday lives.

  24. I have written a reflection on Catcher in the Rye that explains if I would be his friend if he came to my school and my first impressions on the book so far. I think personally see writing that I encounter more persuasive writing rather than any other writing that informs and explains. You encounter persuasive writing anywhere you look television, magazines, billboards, posters, advertisements etc. Also I encounter writing that explains/informs in daily life in newspapers, brochures, the news, instructions that come with a product etc.

  25. In the past few days i have read and written things that fall under the selection of writing that explains and or informs. I have first encountered these forms of writing in my school work, for example, Catcher in the Rye informs us on the young boys life and gives us information towards his problems. I find this type of writing in simple things, like newspapers, mail and letters. There are numerous amounts of forms pertaining to this writing and it is around us everywhere, we do not pay enough attention to these forms of writing. Another form of writing that informed me on a certain something in the last few days was a biography, this giving me information i had never known or something very interesting to me.

  27. In the past few days, I have read only a few things that inform or explain. This weekend, I came across an instruction manual that explain how to hook up a television set. It's not often that I encounter something like this on a frequent basis. In my daily life, I find that writing that informs or explains can be found in a paragraph or writing piece. This genre of writing is not often found in signs, posters, or ad in my daily life. Although, I do think that I encounter more posters, ads, commercials etc on a day to day basis. Therefore, I think that I encounter more persuasive pieces in my daily life then I encounter writing that explains or informs.

  28. Throughout the past couple of days I have personally encountered various forms of both informative and explanatory writing. I have recently read an instructional manual for a new game I got a couple of days ago, to get an understanding for what the objective of the game is, as well as the controls. As it does every week, the Vaughan newspaper, a form of both informative and persuasive writing was delivered and I glanced through it the other day. I also wrote a reflection paper on Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the novel Catcher in the Rye that explained my personal position, as a reader of the novel and also explained if I thought Holden would be a good friend, based on what had been read up until that point in time. I have also encountered several billboards, that may be considered persuasive or informative writing, throughout the past couple of days that informs me of the subject of that particular advertisement. I, personally, think that both informative/explanatory and persuasive writing are two very common, if not the most popular forms of writing in today’s world. I think these two very popular forms of writing are interconnected, in a sense. In my opinion, a lot of times something that is intended to be informative may be perceived as persuasive and the other way around. For these reasons I think that both forms of writing are very popular and are encountered just as commonly as the other.

  29. In the past few days, I have read a scrapbook instruction sheet and a computer manual. These are just two simple forms that falls under the genre of writing that explains and/or informs. This genre is shown to be simpler than persuasive writing, and we are very much in contact with it everyday. This is used to bring forth a simple and straight forward message to an audience. Which makes it easy to grasp a the message at a faster pace. This is a very unique type of writing and I look forward to learn more about this type of writing.

  30. In the past few days i have read a manuel to fix my computer, and a magazine that explained a theory. These two things are considered to be under the genre of writing that explains/informs. You encounter this type of writing genre at least once a day, this writing is everywhere. Writing that explains/informs is used more than persuasive writing because this type of writing is more powerful and is easier to get a point across.

  31. In the past couple of days, the genre of writing that explains/informs that I have used was in one of my projects. My project involved me to explain and instruct readers about different types of natural disasters that occur within Canada. In my opinion, writing that explains/ informs is most commonly used and seen rather than writing that persuades. Although we may not realize this, from the start of our day we encounter situations that may either explain or inform us of something. From the very moment we wake up, our awakening is informed to us by either our alarm clocks or a family member. As well, on our way to school, we encounter signs, stop lights, etc. This instructs us and explains to us the rules of the road. When we arrive at school, we are instructed of the rules we must obey. The same corresponds to being in our homes. As we can see, writing that informs/explains, is much simpler to comprehend and is most commonly seen throughout our daily lives.

  32. I have read many things in the past few days that inform or explains something. Everyday at school i get sheets that inform and explain to me what to do. If i get a test in a class, it informs and explains to me what to do. There are all sorts of examples given to show daily use of informing and explaining, those are just key ones that i noticed and experience. All and all i would have to say that i most likely come across this genre of writting in my everyday life more than persuasive writting, mostly because of the environment i am in.

  33. I have read many examples of writing that informs and/or explains in the past few days. Recently my laptop had stopped booting up so I had found a solution online to fix the problem. The solution both informed and explained because it informed me of the knowledge I needed to know to fix my laptop and it also explained in steps on how to fix my problem. I do believe that writing that informs and explains is more important in my life than persuasive writing because rules are informed all around us, whether it be school rules or laws we must obey. Without certain things being explained it would be hard to accomplish much tasks.

  34. During the past few days I have read and written a few things that fall under the category of writing to explain and inform. In my Civics class I was asked to read some information in my textbook and take notes. The information explained to me how the first constitution was created in England in the year 1215 as a response to the violence in their society. In English class I was told to write a journal entry. The entry was to inform the reader why or why not I would be a friend to a character named Holden in the novel, Catcher in the Rye if he came to my school. Two days ago, I went to a restaurant with my friends. The menu informed me on the meals that they served, and what was in them. It allowed me to make a good choice on what to eat that night. I encounter this type of writing more than persuasive writing. I see a lot less advertisements or other forms of persuasion than I see homework assignments, menus, instructions, or any type of informative and explanatory writing. Informative writing is useful even if you aren’t interested in the topic because it is good to know for future reference. Persuasive writing is not useful to me when I am not interested in the topic. I see less persuasive writing in my daily life than informative and explanatory writing.

  35. I have been reading a couple of types of writing that informs and explains in the past couple of days. This writing is an instruction manual for my new TV remote when I switched to Rogers on Thursday. It came with a very detailed manual on how to operate the TV remote which explained it and informed me on how to use it. Most people do not realize that this is a type of writing they think that an instruction manual falls under some other category. I think that we don’t realize it but we encounter persuasive writing more than writing that explains and informs. The thing about persuasive writing is that it is very secretive and is used in almost everything we read without even realizing it. Writing that instructs and informs is straight out and direct and we notice it more often. However we do encounter persuasive writing more often.
